Custom Envelope Barcode

Barcodes on return envelopes

When a barcode is requested on a return envelope, the post office will generate one and sometimes even create a PDF of what the envelope will look like. Our system generates a new barcode for security reasons so our product may not look exactly like the PDF sent to us but we DO guarantee that the barcode will work and that the envelopes will be compatible with the United States Postal Service (USPS). The barcode will be based on the address, extended zip code and the type of envelope ordered.

IF the EXACT barcode printed on the envelopes per USPS is requested, we can use your own design and create an envelope based on the artwork received, and in this case, the barcode will match. We CANNOT, however, produce a system-generated barcode on a customized order so the barcode MUST be included in the custom artwork provided and only an order with your own design will work in that case.

Both processes are guaranteed compatible so it is really a matter of preference and/or price.

Printing a barcode on return envelopes – the Intelligent Mail® Barcode (IMB)

Since February 1st 2013, the post office requires companies to obtain a mailer ID in order to add a barcode to their return envelopes. The barcode system is called the Intelligent Mail® Barcode.

How do I start?
  1. Fill out the following PDF ( http://about.usps.com/forms/ps3615.pdf ) to obtain a permit with your local post office*
  2. Go to the post office where you plan to take your mail and drop off the permit
  3. Go to www.usps.com to register and manage your account online
  4. Request a mailer ID from the online business portal**
  5. Order your envelopes and provide us with your mailer ID and extended zip code

* There is a one-time application fee and/or yearly permit fee on top of being billed for the mail sent under your permit number. You may also need to discuss your needs with an associate to determine which permit is right for you.

**If you encounter an exception to the number or type of mailer ID that you require, you may also use the following PDF: https://ribbs.usps.gov/intelligentmail_mail_id_app/documents/tech_guides/mailer_id_application.pdf

What is a mailer ID?

The mailer ID is a 6 or 9 digit code that is assigned to you based on an annual mail volume criteria. The 9 digit mailer ID is typically assigned to businesses without any volume requirements.

What is the Intelligent Mail® Barcode?

It is the program used by the Unites States Postal Service that helps to sort and track letters and flat mail. It uses four distinct vertical bar types using previous barcode information (POSTNET™  and Planet Code®) and other data to provide customers with a code capable of encoding more information while saving space on the return envelopes printed with your barcode.
