Artwork Specifications

Color Mode

Your artwork should be designed in CMYK mode using a graphics program such as Photoshop, CorelDraw, Quark, Fireworks, PageMaker, etc. If the file submitted is not CMYK, the RGB or Pantone colors will be converted to CMYK. This can result in colors shifting or dropping out, therefore we highly recommend submitting CMYK artwork for your full color brochures to look sharp. If you are not sure what the final colors will look like, we recommend a hard copy proof so you can view an accurate color representation of your brochures before they go to press. Offset printing will be more picky than digital printing so we especially recommend hard copy proofs if you order over 200 of our full color brochures. Also, keep in mind that colors viewed on a monitor are not an accurate representation of the reality, unless your monitor is calibrated.

File Resolution

The resolution of the file should be 300 dpi minimum. If your file is not 300 dpi, you cannot icrease the dpi in your imaging software as this will result in a blurry image.

Bleeds

Artwork where the printing goes all the way to the cutline need to be extended. You will need to add 1/4 inch for proper bleed (this means 1/8" on each side). If your bochures are 8 1/2" x 11" and the image reaches all 4 borders, the image size you submit should be 8 3/4" x 11 1/4", adding 1/4" on both sides. If your file only bleeds on the left edge for example, the file submitted should be 8 1/2" x 11 1/4" or 8 3/4" x 11", depending on which side needs to be extended to allow for cutting.

Cutting

Please allow 1/8" for cutting. This means that your text should always be 1/8" away from the cutline so that it does not get cut off.

Borders

Our cutting process has a mechanical tolerance of about 1/16" so if you are using a border on your full color brochures' artwork, you will need to design at least 1/4" of white space from the border to the cut line. This will ensure the symmetrical appearance of your border.

Fonts and Transparency

Fonts, transparencies and other visual effects used in vector format software must be flattened or outlined before submitting your file. Not doing so may result in text or graphics being missing from your full color brochures.

How do I get started?

If you are like most people, you are new to brochure printing and design. So here are some things you should consider before you order full color brochures online.

1) Graphic Design Software

The first thing you will need is a graphic design software. Among the most popular, you can purchase Adobe Photoshop®, Adobe Illustrator®, Adobe InDesign®, Adobe Pagemaker®, CorelDraw® or Quark Express®.

If you are worried about the cost of a professional software, there are also open source (free) design software. Such software include Inkscape or Gimp.

If you own a Microsoft® Office license, you may also use Microsoft Publisher to design your brochures. However, make sure to use "Pack & Go" for a commercial printer and avoid using Publisher cliparts.

If you do not own any of the above graphic design software or if you prefer not to worry about the design, you may hire a graphic designer or let us design your file for you.

2) Brochure Size

Once you have your software or graphic company hired, you will need to know which size brochure you will need. Choose from letter size, legal size or large format brochures.

3) Brochure Folding

The type of folding you will require will affect the design, and most specifically how the brochure panels are designed. You will therefore want to select your folding type ahead of time.

4) Brochure Templates

Once you know the brochure size and folding type you need, you should use a brochure template. We supply you with templates that you can download so that you can design your brochures accordingly or provide your graphic designer with important file guidelines. See our Templates.

5) Image Resolution

All the images used in your file should be at 300 dpi minimum. Any pictures you save from the web will not work as web images are usually saved at 72 dpi.

5) Special Needs

If you will have detachable coupons or business cards designed within your brochure, be sure to tell your graphic designer or our art department about the sections requiring dotted lines or perforations.

6) Options

Now, have fun and select any cool options you may like, such as paper type, mailing services and so on.

7) Mailing

If you would like us to mail your brochures, we can certainly do so. We will require a spreadsheet with your contacts and a quote will need to be provided to you. You may also elect to do your own mailing. A good place to start is with the post office.Check out their direct mail services and create an account online.
